Bright mauve-pink petals surrounding a distinctive rich plum center cone. Sow 5mm (¼") deep. May bloom in the first year if planted in early March, but it’s their third year that is really spectacular. Aquilegia canadensis. Red Columbine's wonderful flowers appear mid-spring to early summer, with spurs at the back that are generous with nectar, luring hummingbirds, butterflies, and long tongued bees. Its distinctive red flowers dance and wobble in the slightest breeze. A hardy perennial in Zones 3 to 9, it thrives in partial shade. It can be grown in full sun, but it would benefit from even more soil moisture. The flowers are followed by decorative seed pods that dry and begin to shed their contents in late summer.

Callistephus chinensis. The King Size China Asters are very showy, and make superb cut flowers. The King Size Formula Mix blends the whole series: Appleblossom, Mid-Blue, Pink, Rose, Red, and White. These sumptuous flowers top stems around 90cm (35") tall and bloom all summer. The plants are very upright in growth, with numerous multi-branching stems. Be sure to take frequent harvests of cut flowers, or at least keep the plants dead-headed to prolong and enhance the bloom time. Please follow the planting and spacing instructions closely.

Cuminum cyminum. Cumin is one of the most widely used spices in the world. Its strong flavour balances well with other aromatic spices, and it is central to an incredibly wide range of spice mixes and marinades. In a good hot summer, cumin will produce a wide, robust umbel of tiny white flowers, followed by the unmistakable seeds. While in bloom, cumin joins its cousins cilantro, caraway, and dill as highly prized food sources for a host of beneficial insects. Cumin can even be planted for this single purpose, and it will attract ladybird beetles, lacewings, hover flies, and a wide range of predatory wasps. Cumin grows to about 50cm (20") tall.

C. maxima. This old heirloom is thought to have been originally cultivated in Brazil, possibly prior to European contact. Moranga simply means 'pumpkin' in Portuguese, and it is sometimes listed as abóbora moranga. Its sweetness and pleasant texture make it an excellent cooking pumpkin, but its deep lobes and pinky orange exterior make it highly ornamental as well. The plants are vigorous and productive, and have an unusually high number of male flowers. Fruit sizes varies from 4-8 lbs. The fruits develop light coloured stripes as they mature, which indicate where the creases between each lobe will form.

What a wonderful flavour! The thick, pale green flesh of this Galia-type melon has a rich, tropical aroma and taste. Diplomat is tolerant to powdery mildew as well. The 2.2-2.8kg (5-6lbs) fruits have yellow skins and fine netting, and they grow on strong vines. Trellis these vines or let them sprawl on the ground. Grow in full sun, and do everything you can to increase heat around the plants. Black plastic mulch works well, building and trapping solar energy in the soil for warmer roots and less evaporation.
